The title of this post was spoken to me with such conviction by a highly spirited five-year-old while I was living on Saltspring Island about ten years ago. It struck a chord in me, and I've never forgotten the wise words of this young one that ring so true. These words express the power we have to get what we want, but they also charge you with owning responsibility for everything that comes your way. However, we often want something without knowing the reality of how that will play out once it has arrived.
One time I was sure I wanted to move out of my family house for the first time, and live away with my boyfriend in the next province. So, I quit my job, said goodbye to everyone, and moved all of my furniture to our new apartment. Bad idea. It didn't take me long to throw my clothes in my car, drive back home and call up my boss to ask for my old job back (which he was happy to hear).
[Important note: Don't concern yourself about what other people are going to think about your choices. You are the one who has to live with your life choices, so make then according to what works for you and nobody else.]
Most times, you never know how it's going to be until you get what you want. Failure doesn't come without trying, but neither does success. Follow your heart. You can always make changes accordingly. This is how you learn about what you want, and what you don't want. It's all an experiment, a learning curve, and hopefully with life experience, you get better at getting the results you want, and you're happy when "you get what you get"!So go for what you want (not what you think others want for you). Make this your mantra for 2012.
I'll end with my favourite quote:
"Risk! Risk anything! Care no more for the opinions of others, for those voices. Do the hardest thing on earth for you. Act for yourself. Face the truth."
~ From the journal of Katherine Mansfield, 1922
